Each of these quilt blocks is constructed of simple squares and half square triangles as follows:
1) two half square triangle blocks (1/2 background fabric and 1/2 cat or dog "fur" fabric)
2) 1 full square block of cat or dog "fur" fabric
3) 1 full square block of background fabric

The only rule is to make the half square triangle set the same size as each full square.
Combine the 4 pieces, add buttons and voila - you have a cat or dog. I chose to use a triangle shaped button for the cat's nose and an oval button for the dog's nose. Notice also how the dog nose is placed further away from the eyes. Play around with button shapes and placement until you are satisfied then just stitch them on.

Star of Dogs Block - Quarter Square Triangle Variation If you'd like a little more definition of the dog's ears, use 2 quarter square triangles of "fur" with 1 half square triangle of background fabric in step 1 of the block instructions.

Design Your Own If you love both cats and dogs, it would be very easy to combine two cat blocks and two dog blocks into one "Cats and Dogs Star" block!

Star of Cats Block Simply create 4 of the Cat blocks shown above, using either 2 or 4 different "fur" fabrics. Then rotate the blocks and sew them together to create a "Star of Cats".

Star of Dogs Block Simply create 4 of the Dog blocks shown above, using either 2 or 4 different "fur" fabrics. Then rotate the blocks and sew them together to create a "Star of Dogs ".
